DIY Tree Stump Side Table

DIY Tree Stump Side Table |Hello Yellow by Leon’s FurnitureFrom raw and semi-raw materials all types of goods can be created…like that boring woodpile pictured below!  An ambitious DIY’er can transform these old bumpy logs into something others will find attractive and inspiring. I first discovered tree stump side tables on a home accessory website. I loved the look of them but I sure didn’t love the price! I’m lucky, my parents live in the country on a farm and I have all the natural resources I could want at my fingertips. Today I’m going to teach you how to make your own DIY tree stump side table and how you can transform raw materials into something beautiful and functional! DIY Tree Stump Side Table |Hello Yellow by Leon’s FurnitureStep 1: Find an old log, if the bark is falling off that usually means its a little more dried out than a log with the bark on. That’s actually a good thing as the drying time is quite long. The tree I used for my table is spruce. Using a pencil, mark your stump where you want to cut. Here’s where the FUN begins! Cut your stump to the height you want with a chain saw—Vrooom Vrooom! You can rent one for a small fee at your local Rent-All Store. Wearing your trusty safety glasses, cut your log and make sure that both ends are even so that the stump sits balanced. Set indoors to dry. It’s a lengthy process to dry out a log, but the longer you let the wood dry the better it will be for your project as wood shrinks as it dries out. This process will take approximately 7-8 weeks!

Use a pry bar to gently scrape the bark off—being careful not to mar the surface of the stump. If your stump is thoroughly dried, the bark shouldn’t be too difficult to remove. Once you have all the bark off, use an electric sander and begin sanding the top and the bottom of the stump. You want to get the surface as smooth as possible. I used a heavier gauge sandpaper and graduated to a finer grit as I progressed to give it a baby bottom smooth surface!DIY Tree Stump Side Table |Hello Yellow by Leon’s Furniture DIY Tree Stump Side Table |Hello Yellow by Leon’s FurnitureStep 3: Use a wire wheel brush (make sure you wear those nifty safety glasses—you KNOW they look awesome on you!) to remove any natural substance from the wood stump. Sand the surface of the stump until it’s smooth. This is the longest and most arduous part but well worth the effort. Once the stump is smooth you may notice fine hair like particles that remain, no worries, it’s perfectly normal.DIY Tree Stump Side Table |Hello Yellow by Leon’s FurnitureStep 4: Wipe your stump off with a cloth to remove any sawdust residue. To keep the natural colouring of the wood, apply 3 coats of clear satin Polyurethane—I highly recommend water-based as it’s easiest to clean up. Sand lightly and wipe with a cloth between coats. This process will diminish those fine hair particles on the surface of your stump. Another fun option is to apply stain or paint your stump, personalize with a popping colour to create a more dramatic effect. DIY Tree Stump Side Table |Hello Yellow by Leon’s Furniture

In this post, the tree stump side table is without any Polyurethane– it’s very natural, which looks awesome next to the bold colours. But be cautious, if you spill it will seep into the wood! DIY Tree Stump Side Table |Hello Yellow by Leon’s Furniture

These tree stumps are easy DIY’s that are one of a kind and bring a great amount of warmth and nature into your home. Use them as a side table, nightstand, extra seating or layer them in front of your couch. In this post the tree stump side table is used in Max’s nursery.

The possibilities are endless!
