How To Clean & Care For Your Kitchen Appliances

There’s something about stainless steel appliances. They are a sleek, professional, and oh-so-shiny addition to any kitchen, but boy do they sometimes attract fingerprints, spills, smudges, and watermarks!

A Clean and Spotless LG Kitchen

In my house I am my own worst enemy. If I am not dripping water from the water dispenser down the front of the fridge, I am running to the stove to remove a pot that just boiled over. My fridge is often overcrowded and my dishwasher is constantly packed to the brim. No kitchen is perfectly spotless, and if you ask me a messy kitchen is a sign that delicious food is to be had!

And while the keeping, preparing and cooking of the food can be fun, cleaning up after the “magic happens” is sometimes… not so fun! Keeping your kitchen clean and in working order not only creates a positive impression and makes you feel good, but can prolong the life of your home’s hardest working appliances!

Here are some of my tried and true appliance cleaning tips!

Tips for Cleaning a Gas Range

  • Cast iron pan supports can be removed and washed in warm soapy water. Rinse to ensure no soap residue remains. Let air dry.
  • The burner caps (or flame spreaders) can also be removed and washed in warm soapy water. If stained or discoloured from spills a more abrasive cleaner, like oven cleaner, can be used. Ensure caps are both dry and free of chemical residue before re-installing the caps.
  • Using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser or a non-abrasive ceramic cleaner clean the “drip” portion below the grates.
  • The stainless steel on the back of the range as well as on the front can be cleaned using stainless steel wipes and a dry cloth. Apply in the direction of the metal grain and buff using the dry cloth.
  • Should your range have the “self-cleaning” option it can be easily activated on the range control panel. Cleaning can range from light to deep. Just note the range will get very hot during the cleaning period and can emit an odor.

Tips for Cleaning a Refrigerator

  • When cleaning the shelves and drawers inside the refrigerator (and freezer) remove all food and place in a cooler filled with ice. Wipe the interior down using warm soapy water and a cloth or paper towel. For heavily soiled shelves or stuck on messes try sprinkling surface with baking soda and spritzing with some vinegar, Use a paper towel or cloth to scrub.
  • If your refrigerator uses an internal air filtering system & water filtration system (like my LG Door-In-Door refrigerator does) you may be required to replace it every 3-6 months.
  • The front of the stainless steel fridge can be cleaned using stainless steel wipes and a dry cloth. Apply in the direction of the metal grain and buff using the dry cloth.
  • You’d be surprised what can get trapped behind/under your fridge. Take a moment to pull the fridge away from the wall to vacuum/clean behind it!

Tips for Cleaning a Dishwasher

  • Keeping your dishwashers filter system clean is of upmost importance; it can help your dishwasher run more efficiently and keep it from smelling like a trash can! Simply remove the filter and soak it in warm soapy water for 15-20 minutes. Clean and reinstall. Run your empty dishwasher immediately afterwards with 1 cup of vinegar poured in the bottom.
  • Don’t forget the inside of the door. Sometimes liquids and foods can drip onto the edge of the door that seals the dishwasher. Clean dried on drips using a cloth and warm soapy water. It’s also worth it to dig into the grooves of the rubber seal and hinges to remove any residue.
  • The front of the stainless steel dishwasher can be cleaned using stainless steel wipes and a dry cloth. Apply in the direction of the metal grain and buff using the dry cloth.
