Mastering The Art of Rest: A Multifunctional Master Retreat

From makeshift to masterpiece, a multifunctional retreat worth its weight in pillows

Six months into moving (into what is hopefully our forever home), we were still sleeping on pullout daybed with a mattress that was no more than 4 inches thick. For us, this was unfortunately an upgrade since we were previously sleeping on the floor on an old mattress because our bed broke during the move. Our nightstand was a chair and table we found curbside and, with the addition of two curious tots, this room saw more chaos than rest. Eventually, poor sleep caught up to us and we realized in order to give ourselves some TLC, we needed to give our bedroom some first.

In my dreams, this room was to become a place to get away after a day of rolling on the floor and chasing after two toddlersor even just a place I could get a good night’s sleep in. Turns out my dreams came true! Not only is this space a complete getaway, but mama can actually wake up feeling rested.

The Metrie panel moulding (painted in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White) and rich blue walls (in Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron) add drama—the good kind—and the king bed, Simmons Grand Luxe Plush Mattress and rug instantly make it a space worth snuggling in.

A moment of pause after a hectic day, when the whole family piles in, we have peace of mind knowing our cables, books and snacks are safely tucked away in our Conventry Lane nightstands. And another simple luxury that I didn’t know I was missing out on? Having storage at the foot of our bed! Extra blankets? Pillows? Bedsheets? Right there. Convenience is key with our new Windchester King Storage Bed!

Having a sitting area in the room means I can read, get some work done and even hang out with the kids as I fold laundry and they watch TV. It’s such a multifunctional space nowand we couldn’t have asked for anything more!

Prioritizing this space ended up being one of my husband’s best ideas—other than his brilliant electronics hiding hack! But I think he mostly likes it because now he can lay in bed and watch TV as I snore away next to him (yes, we’re living the dream)! But in addition, it’s the personal touches we added (such as the framed photo of the boys and I, the DIY breakfast tray and art piece above the bed) that remind us that it all starts right here, within these walls.
